New media such as VR/AR/XR, streaming entertainment, smartphone communication, and social media not only have created new lifestyles but also have brought about remarkable transformations in our bodily, cognitive, and emotional experiences. More importantly, they urge us to rethink what it means to be “human” in that, today, a prominent part of our thinking and feeling capabilities seems to be prompted—if not significantly operated—by digital media. This course will examine the abovementioned transformations as well as the social, cultural, and politico-economic impacts of new media. We will address these questions theoretically and also debate issues based on empirical research.
The course puts great emphasis on honing the students’ critical thinking abilities, challenging them to reconsider what they might have taken for granted. A side goal of the course is for students to entertain the prospect of using the knowledge gained in this class in their future career development.
The course is designed according to three thematic rubrics:
1) New Ways of Thinking and Feeling
2) Control Society
3) New Media Art |
1) Regular attendance. This includes required visits to particular art exhibitions (at least once, possibly twice).
2) Preparation and class participation. Active participation in class discussion is essential. Prior preparation is expected for the latter parts of the semester but not required for the weeks of Rubric 1.
3) Midterm exam. In-class written exam, covering only excerpts of class readings from Rubric 1.
4) Oral presentation of term project in Week 17.
**Prepare a 15-minute presentation on a topic of your choice. Pick either track:
(A) Study of a topical issue related to digital media, such as those addressed under the “Control Society” rubric (but not limited to topics discussed in class)
(B) Analysis of a new media artwork/exhibition or response to questions raised by new media artists
**You may work independently or pair up with a classmate. The presentation may be in Chinese or English.
**Refer to the class schedule for deadlines for these written assignments related to the project:
(A) Preliminary ideas about your project, 200 words minimum (due in Week 13)
(B) A list of references you have consulted so far for your project (due in Week 16)
(C) Summary of your project, which must be an essay, not a rough outline: 900 words minimum if you work on your own, and 800 words min. for each person if you collaborate with a classmate (due on Jan. 2).
All of these assignments must be prepared in English, to be submitted on NTU COOL.
**An individual meeting with the instructor will be scheduled for Week 14 to discuss your project. |
